Cold Stare
Goroka Singsing, PNG

The hardened faces and intense stare of the men of PNG was at times disconcerting. Many of the older tribesmen had practiced headhunting and partook in tribal warfare. The vast majority of the people who initially looked fearsome cracked a big smile when you waived or took a picture, but not always. PNG is taking great strides to keep tourists safe and change their tarnished reputation, but one must always be careful. This man is from Kutubu in the Southern Highlands Province of PNG.

Papua New Guinea

PNG is a snapshot in time, with the tribes of the Highlands seeing outsiders for the first time in 1930. Headhunting and cannibalism are traditional practices that were only recently subdued through heavy missionary influence. The rugged terrain maintained tribal isolation resulting in 800 unique languages and cultures. The few travelers who visit this amazing country are rewarded with an adventure of a lifetime.
