Mudman Close-Up
Goroka, PNG

The Asaro village is located northwest of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands of PNG. The mudmen’s huge clay masks, while quite intimidating, are quite heavy and uncomfortable. I have to question how these could practically be worn in battle except for the initial intimidation aspect. The mudmen at the Goroka singsing moved very slowly and ghost-like, snapping their bows at you or poking you with their spears from behind.

PNG is a snapshot in time, with the tribes of the Highlands seeing outsiders for the first time in 1930. Headhunting and cannibalism are traditional practices that were only recently subdued through heavy missionary influence. The rugged terrain maintained tribal isolation resulting in 800 unique languages and cultures. The few travelers who visit this amazing country are rewarded with an adventure of a lifetime.
