Wigman Portrait
Goroka Singsing, PNG

The vast Tari basin is the home of the Huli Wigmen. The men grow their hair for 18 months to cut and create great mushroom-shaped wigs. They grow their hair largely in isolation and apply magic water three times a day to lighten. Sleeping with their heads elevated on sticks, they must keep their hair bug-free or bring shame to themselves and their families. The warrior pictured here rests in silent meditation.

Papua New Guinea

PNG is a snapshot in time, with the tribes of the Highlands seeing outsiders for the first time in 1930. Headhunting and cannibalism are traditional practices that were only recently subdued through heavy missionary influence. The rugged terrain maintained tribal isolation resulting in 800 unique languages and cultures. The few travelers who visit this amazing country are rewarded with an adventure of a lifetime.
