Life moves very slow in PNG, especially during the oppressive heat of the day. The alternative to chewing betelnut is smoking very harsh, hand-rolled cigarettes. The boredom was evident by the excitement generated by our driving through town, with throngs of people waving and smiling at us. The very brave would tentatively touch my sister's blond hair, a great novelty. We often felt like prom queens on display.

PNG is a snapshot in time, with the tribes of the Highlands seeing outsiders for the first time in 1930. Headhunting and cannibalism are traditional practices that were only recently subdued through heavy missionary influence. The rugged terrain maintained tribal isolation resulting in 800 unique languages and cultures. The few travelers who visit this amazing country are rewarded with an adventure of a lifetime.
